There’s a moment in every story when a hero storms onto the page and refuses to leave quietly. Sometimes he’s brooding. Sometimes he’s downright infuriating. But always? He’s unforgettable. That’s the magic of creating brooding book boyfriends. The elements of men.
And here’s the fun part: none of my broody men are based on real-life people. Not even close. They’re born purely from imagination, built layer by messy, beautiful layer until they feel real enough to walk off the page. Want to know how I do it? Let’s go behind the scenes.
My First Brooding Hero: Owen
Ah, Owen. He was the MMC from my very first short story. The story that kicked off my entire author journey. He wasn’t inspired by anyone I knew, he just appeared. A fictional man with a heart that couldn’t help but crave love.
Owen will always have a special place in my heart, because he was the proof that yes, I could create a hero who made my readers blush, sigh, and stay up way too late reading. (And maybe made me rethink what I really wanted in a man 👀).
The Hero Blueprint: Flaws, Strengths & Vulnerability
Every brooding hero has a core. A “blueprint” I sketch before I let him loose in a story. For me, it comes down to three things:
- Flaws: He’s human. He’s scarred. Maybe he had a difficult past, messy family bonds, or heartbreaks that shaped him.
- Strengths: At his core, he wants to protect and connect. He’s strong enough to fight for what matters, and tender enough to love fiercely.
- Vulnerability: Strip away the layers, and there’s always a big, beating heart. He wants love. He needs love. He just might not admit it at first.
That mix? That’s what makes a man swoon-worthy, unforgettable, and just frustrating enough to keep readers (and me) hooked.
Tropes We Can’t Resist (With My Twist)
Let’s be honest; We love romance novel tropes. The loner with a heart of gold. The reluctant protector. The bad boy who secretly obsesses over poetry.
Some of you are team alpha, some of you are team cinnamon roll. (Personally? I love playing with both. 😉)
Yes, I twist them. I give them quirks. Maybe he hums when he cooks. Maybe he keeps a stash of letters he’ll never send. Those small, human details keep him from being a cardboard cliché and instead turn him into the man you secretly wish would knock on your door. Maybe this is not at all known through my short stories and novella’s, but know that each and every one of them characters have a background story.

A Fun Little Confession
Since we’re being honest here… I love writing the spicy scenes from the MMC’s POV more than the FMC’s. I don’t know why. It just flows easier. Maybe it’s the way men hold their tension, their hunger, their single-minded focus when they want a woman. 🤭
Don’t get me wrong, I write both. But something about slipping into the male perspective during those hot, charged moments? Delicious. Go figure, right?
A Tease of What’s Coming Next…
Every hero I write feels like the most important one while I’m with him. But the next hero coming to you? Let’s just say he’s darker, more intense, and very, very hard to resist. Protective, flawed, unforgettable. Just how you all like them.

🐦 On Threads: Tell me — who’s your all-time favorite brooding hero? Book, movie, or mine.
Brooding heroes, or as I like to call them, the brooding book boyfriends, aren’t just characters. They’re experiences. They’re the messy, infuriating, swoon-worthy men who keep us turning pages, dreaming bigger, and maybe, just maybe, raising our real-life standards a little higher.
Now tell me — what’s your weakness in a hero? A flaw, a secret obsession, or something else entirely? I want to know 👀.
